Distance and flight time
The great-circle distance from London Biggin Hill to Nice Côte d'Azur is 544 nm (1,008 km). From Farnborough it is 560 nm (1,037 km) and from Luton 580 nm (1,074 km). Cannes-Mandelieu is almost exactly the same distance from Farnborough as Nice, so the choice between them comes down to where you are going on the ground and the size of aircraft.
At these distances every jet category flies the route nonstop with ample reserve. The table shows typical airborne times assuming normal cruise speeds and no wind; a strong headwind on the return can add 10 minutes or more, and air traffic routing over France can lengthen the track slightly.
| Aircraft category | Example types | Typical seats | Approximate flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light jet | Phenom 300E, Citation CJ3 | 5 to 7 | 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours |
| Midsize jet | Citation Latitude | 7 to 9 | 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes |
| Super-midsize jet | Challenger 3500, Citation Longitude | 8 to 10 | 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Heavy jet | Falcon 7X, Global 6500 | 12 to 17 | 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes |
Nice Côte d'Azur or Cannes-Mandelieu
Nice Côte d'Azur sits on the coast about 7 km west of Nice city centre and about 20 km from Monaco. It has two parallel runways, the longer about 2,960 m, and a dedicated business aviation terminal, opened in 2010, which houses operations rooms, VIP lounges and crew lounges. It can take any business jet and VIP airliners, and EBAA figures ranked it the second busiest business aviation airport in Europe in 2022, with 39,648 business aviation movements that year.
Cannes-Mandelieu is about 5 km west of Cannes, with a main runway of 1,610 m. A French ministerial order limits jet aircraft there to a certified maximum take-off mass of 35 tonnes (22 tonnes for turboprops) and bars jets certified to Chapter 3 with a cumulative noise margin below 13 EPNdB, which rules out some older types. Since the weight limit was raised from 22 tonnes in 2015, types such as the Falcon 7X and Gulfstream G450 have been able to use it; the largest Global and Gulfstream long-range jets, and airliners, still go to Nice.

Getting to Monaco
Monaco has no airport, so private flights for the Principality land at Nice. Scheduled and private helicopters run from Nice airport to Monaco, a flight of about 7 minutes according to the operator Monacair, against about 45 minutes by road along the coast. We can arrange a helicopter or car transfer to meet the aircraft.
For Cannes, Mandelieu is the closer airport if the aircraft is eligible; by helicopter, Monacair puts Nice airport to Cannes at about 10 minutes against roughly 45 minutes by car. For Saint-Tropez, both Nice and Cannes-Mandelieu are used, with the final leg by road or helicopter.
Season and peak events
Demand on this route follows the Riviera calendar. The Cannes Film Festival runs for around 12 days each May, and the Monaco Grand Prix follows in late May or early June, so in some years the two peaks run almost back to back and Nice does not fully reset between them. Trip planners for operators say parking at Nice is the first constraint, and aircraft, crews and slots are committed weeks ahead. High summer is the other busy period on the Riviera.
Nice runs a slot system coordinated by COHOR, and late requests in peak periods do not get priority. Cannes-Mandelieu, with its weight limit and no extensions to its operating hours, suits smaller aircraft dropping off and collecting but is not a reliable overflow for Nice. Toulon, Marseille and Le Castellet are the usual alternates when both are full, with a longer road or helicopter transfer.
If your dates fall in one of these windows, book early and be flexible on the London airport. Outside the peaks, availability is usually good at short notice, and one-way trips can sometimes be matched with empty sectors returning to London.
Indicative cost
For a rough budget, multiply the flight time by an indicative hourly rate for the category, then double it for a return. Our cost guide puts very light and light jets at about £1,500 to £4,500 per flight hour, so a one-way London to Nice sector of around two hours works out at about £3,000 to £9,000 of flight time. Midsize and super-midsize jets, at about £3,000 to £7,000 per flight hour, give roughly £5,000 to £12,500 for the same sector, with more room for passengers and luggage.
These figures are indicative and exclude handling, landing and parking fees, taxes and any positioning if no suitable aircraft is based in London on the day. Prices rise around the May events and in high summer.
