The Journey
Two stages to the Caribbean's most sought-after island.
St. Barths is one of the Caribbean's most sought-after destinations, especially over Christmas and New Year.
Its short runway and challenging approach mean long-range private jets cannot land on the island, so the journey is best planned as two stages: a long-range jet to the region, then a carefully chosen onward transfer.
Via St. Maarten
A long-range jet to St. Maarten, then a private aircraft
The simplest route runs through Princess Juliana International Airport, the main gateway for private flyers, with a short final hop to the island.
The long-haul leg ends at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in St. Maarten. Suitable aircraft include the Gulfstream G550, Bombardier Global 6000 and Dassault Falcon 7X, depending on your departure point, party size and baggage.
From there, a dedicated smaller aircraft such as a Pilatus PC-12 or Cessna Grand Caravan flies you to Gustaf III Airport (SBH) in around 15 minutes, subject to operator approval. Confirm seating, baggage weight and luggage volume in advance, particularly for parties of four to six. A private vehicle can then take you directly to your villa, hotel or yacht.
By Helicopter
A scenic arrival, where a service can be arranged
A helicopter from St. Maarten offers a scenic arrival, but it depends on the operator.
Availability depends on the operator, route permissions, capacity and landing arrangements. Confirm a direct transfer is possible for your dates and group. If not, the dedicated aircraft remains the most straightforward choice.
By Sea
A more leisurely arrival from St. Maarten

For those in no hurry, the final stage can be made by private speedboat, luxury motor yacht or superyacht.
The crossing from St. Maarten typically takes 30 to 60 minutes or longer, depending on the vessel and sea conditions. Confirm the departure marina, arrival arrangements, luggage capacity and immigration formalities beforehand.
A yacht suits those planning to cruise around St. Barths or neighbouring islands, while a speedboat or the connecting flight is more practical for a simple transfer.
Choosing a Route
Which option is best?
Each route suits a different priority, and all depend on booking ahead.
- Speed and convenience: private jet to St. Maarten, then a dedicated aircraft.
- Scenic arrival: helicopter, where a suitable service is available.
- Relaxed luxury: speedboat or yacht from St. Maarten.
Book the onward transfer well ahead, as demand peaks over Christmas and New Year. Weather can affect both flights and sea crossings, so keep a contingency plan.
The Oryx Perspective
The journey is only as good as its weakest link.

The long-haul flight is the easy part; the skill lies in the connection.
At Oryx Global Aviation, we see St. Barths as a destination where the journey is only as good as its weakest link. The skill lies in matching the right aircraft to your party and baggage, securing a suitably approved aircraft for the final hop, and making both legs work together.
For most clients, we recommend a long-range jet into St. Maarten followed by a dedicated aircraft to St. Barths, with a vehicle waiting on arrival. For those who prefer to arrive by sea, Oryx Black Edition can also help arrange boat and yacht charters where required, keeping everything under one point of contact.
If you are planning St. Barths for the festive season, speak to the Oryx team early.
Aircraft suitability, helicopter availability, yacht routes, sea conditions and airport permissions should be confirmed directly with the relevant operators before booking.
